About ICMM

The International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM) is an international and intergovermental organization created in 1921. In homage to Belgium which took the initiative in founding the precursory organization of the International Committee of Military Medicine, the seat of the Secretariat General of the ICMM is located in Belgium.

ICMM brings together over 100 member and observer states to advance military medicine. Its core function:

of scientific and technical knowledge in military medical domains (emergency medicine, field surgery, logistics, veterinary medicine, disaster response, etc.)

and Regional Congresses that serve as forums for policy dialogue, research presentation, and networking.

of the Armed Forces Medical Services, a scholarly journal that disseminates research and best practices from around the world.

with international organisations such as WHO, ICRC, OIE, UNAIDS, and others to align military medical efforts with global health and humanitarian standards.

The ICMM is politically neutral and impartial; it facilitates collaboration among states from all over the world, regardless of their affiliation, geopolitical alignment nor political system, with the singular focus on sharing knowledge on medical care and readiness in military contexts. 

ICMM Structures

In order to adapt to regional specificities, the ICMM Secretary General has set up Regional Working Groups (RWG). Member countries with geographical proximit can join one or more RWGs on a voluntary basis.

The Technical Commissions (TCs) represent the various military health professions. They develop the specific aspects of the activities related to the exercise of these professions in the context of the Armed Forces.

The Center of Reference for Education on International Humanitarian Law and Ethics is mandated by the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM), and its chair is elected by the General Assembly of the ICMM.
